Oh man.
As you may know I just came from the Kyary Pamyu Pamyu concert. It was the first legitimate concert I have ever been to, and everything went as I have hoped. It was by no means perfect on the other hand but I think…
Oh let me just write about it.
So I managed to get there before 4 PM just to get in line because I knew there’d be a line. As you know I took a photo with this shirt before the concert, saying if you’d see me remember to holla. Well that’s exactly what happened; I met peeps who recognized me from the T-shirt. So I managed to befriend lots of people whom I had long conversations with regarding both the Kyary concert and the Lakers game next door. All the way until 7.
Then we finally entered Club Nokia, and had to wait (again) in another long line just to enter the performance hall. If you got there early like I did, you’d make the center stage, or the “mosh pit”. No, this was not a good idea to go into the mosh pit because…well I’ll explain that later.
There was a delay. There was no way the concert would have started at the 7:00 starting time. The delay was an hour and a half, and it got tiring just standing there for minutes upon minutes, cramped like sardines. It was not a nice feeling, but for Kyary, I, as well as hundreds of her fans who attended tonight’s concert, would have endured.
Fast forward to the lights fading to black, and the concert started. A small compilation of Kyary’s hits played before she entered the stage, and, with the introductory “Pamyu Pamyu Revolution” song as the opening, the queen herself finally appeared before our eyes. And I have never cheered louder in my life.
Her concert consisted of all the sugar coated hits, such as “Candy Candy”, “PONPONPON”, “Ninjari Bang Bang”, and “Furisodeshon”. But she also mixed the non-single songs found only in her album and EP, such as “Cherry Bon Bon”, “Oyasumi”, “Onedari 44C”, and “Kyary ANAN”. She did present her American fans with the full version of “Invader Invader”, her newest upcoming single, and got the crowd into it with choreography the crowd can do during the concert. The intermission shows that showed when she was backstage were a nice touch, as it present the fans with a bit of Kyary’s legacy before she became the major Japanese pop icon she is now. As an encore performance, she ended the show with “Tsukema Tsukeru”, and overall it was one of the greatest nights in my life. However…
…you’d think that the concert would be perfect. It was amazing, but by no means was it perfect. For starters, the delay was expected, but it dragged on for quite a while before Kyary walked on stage. If your feet weren’t hurting by the time the concert started, more power to you. But I can’t say much because I was battling upper back tightness from the gym yesterday, so yeah…I felt like Dwight Howard after back surgery or something. But I digress, there were also drunk idiots that ruined the concert for some fans. In the mosh pit, they were rowdy, sweaty, smelled like a mix of beer and a portupotty, and they pushed everyone away and tried flirting with girls in the audience. Hell, one drunk guy pushed a girl down. Now that’s just not right…and again this is my first concert so I didn’t know they sold beer at a J-Pop concert. Yes that is my innocent mind talking.
And this is based on preference but, Ms. Takemura missed two of my favorite songs…”Choito Iino” and “Unite Unite”. Again it’s based on preference. But hey this is just a bit of a nitpick.
Overall I have had the night of my life. I’m a huge Kyary Pamyu Pamyu fan after my J-Pop group went down last week (Ebisu Muscats), so I’ve been blasting Kyary songs ever since. I even grabbed a $30 shirt as a souvenir for the concert, because damn when is Kyary coming back anyway? I also got interviewed by Kyary’s documentary crew, so Kyary will remember that dude in the Pikachu shirt, at least I hope. Good; I said on the camera that “Kyary is mah baby” so…yeah…she might see that :P
For those of you who ran into that dude in the Pikachu shirt, well, I follow back. I just want to run into the peeps I met at the concert again here on Tumblr, because you peeps were cool :)

Tiny Review: Hobonichi Techo 2013
It might seem odd for Tiny Cartridge to review a daily planner, but I’m always curious about anything Mother/Earthbound creator Shigesato Itoi is involved in, whether it’s his copywriting work, his appearances on Iron Chef as a judge, or even his free DSiWare app for tracking your health.
Plus, when I shared the news last month that Itoi’s company Hobonichi released its popular Japanese planner in English for the first time this year, many of you showed interest in importing a copy. Hobonichi was kind enough to send a Techo (planner) over for us to review, so now you get to hear why you should (or shouldn’t) buy the planner.

Did you know?
Anime Expo’s Karaoke Room has a tradition of closing with X Japan’s Forever Love
Photo by Elliot Trinidad - AX 2011

A long time ago, back in the age of anime convention antiquity, there was a band called 5XL. 5XL was the first full band to ever perform at Anime Expo, way back in 1998. (Before that, musical performances at AX were singer only.)
5XL covered anime and j-rock songs and typically closed its gigs with Forever Love by X Japan, the closing song from X: The Movie (note: the link goes to the actual ending, so advance the video to 1:03 if you don’t want to be spoiled)
Whenever we (the band members and friends) went out to sing karaoke, we’d sing it often as we actually liked the song. It had this totally cheesy video about rock climbers, where one of them falls off a 10 foot cliff and gets paralyzed, and then goes through this whole Rocky-like sequence where he tries to climb the mountain again and then fails valiantly and his girlfriend cries. Or something like that.
At that time, AX Karaoke was basically an ad hoc affair- if random staff felt like it after their duties were done, they’d bring some CDs to an empty room, plug in some microphones, and sing for a couple of hours with attendees. A few of us staffed for FanimeCon and had just started a Karaoke Department there. Most of us (except for our drummer, who staffed AX Con Ops, and our keyboard player, who staffed in the Exhibit Hall) had nothing else to do during the rest of AX, and heck, nobody else seemed to want to do it, so we kind of just started running a more formal karaoke room for AX.
Since we closed out our concerts with Forever Love, and it seemed like a cool closing sort of song, we thought it’d be totally fitting to close out our convention open mics with that song as well, with the entire staff and attendees all on stage. Of course, when it’s 6AM and the sun’s already up and you’ve heard Sobakasu for the 98263th time, a lot of things are good ideas. But this one stuck with us.
As karaoke grew in popularity, the group grew to include people who were not band members. Finally, in 2004 the assembled crew who ran karaoke across both FanimeCon and AX formally organized as a group, and today, the Karaoke Kaizokudan (KKD) runs Karaoke events at FanimeCon, Anime Expo, AOD, SacAnime, and PMX.
The song itself is not requested all that often anymore at open mic, as fans have moved on to newer music, but the Forever Love tradition is carried on yearly at AX (and some years, FanimeCon) as part of the Karaoke room’s Closing Ceremonies for those conventions.
As for the band, it played for the last time after AX 2000 and then broke up. Today, the bass player is the last member still active in the KKD.
